Do you need to have a social media presence?
I’ll answer the question but quoting one of my professors who says that 95% of the questions in this world can be answered by two simple words: “It Depends”
Even today, where social media is a growing trend, where every company and individual is trying to take advantage of it’\s limitless possibilities, there are companies which have none or very little activity online.
You have to understand that I am not an advocate of social media for no reason. If you still think social media is simply a fad, I beg you to wake up and look around you. Did you know that as of 2011, there are 500,000,000 users on Facebook? No I am not kidding. Not only that, 48% of those are between the ages of 18 and 30.
What does that mean for a company who, for example, is targeting students? Well, it means that you don’t really have a choice but to be present online, because believe it or not, we spend more than 65% of our day on the internet in some form or the other.
As a company, I think there are some questions that you should consider when it comes to online marketing:
WHERE: You have to understand where your target market is present. The key is to be present where your consumers are.
WHY: Adopt social media with a purpose. You have to have a goal in mind with which you will utilize the online platform. This can include promotion, communication with your consumers, online contests, brand awareness and so on.
HOW: Even though social media sounds so “simple”, it really isn’t that easy. Have a team or an individual who is responsible enough to represent your company online. It is also important to plan out where you want to be present online. Choose less, but effective websites that can get you enough exposure and help achieve your brand mission. The hard part isn’t to register a company account, it is HOW you are able to manage and portray yourself online.
There are many more essentials that the company must keep in mind, but the above ones are some of the simpler steps that might be considered to, at least, step into the online world without fear or hesitation. Of course, there might be a lot of surprises, but there is always an opportunity to learn and grow.
